Geographic Information Systems

GISLayersWhat is a Geographic Information System?

A geographic information system, or GIS, is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. Things like zoning, tax parcel information, flood zones, crime data and more can be fed into a database and then displayed on a map so that it can be analyzed visually and the results can be used to aid decision making. The City of Hammond utilizes GIS for city planning, permitting, utilities, streets, and more.

The City of Hammond’s GIS system allows sharing of this data with the public. Basic questions like “What is my property zoned?” or “What council district am I in?” can be easily answered by looking at the map. Information is layered onto the map and users are able to turn the display of sets of information on or off, view attributes of map features by clicking on them, and search the map all through the City’s online interface.
