NOTE TO EDITORS: For accuracy, please use a dateline of "ROBERT,LA" when referencing the area where Bardwell lives. Robert, LA is an "unincorporated area of Tangipahoa Parish" located several miles east of the city limits of Hammond, LA.
THANK YOU for your help in clarifying this issue.
HAMMOND,La.---Hammond Mayor Mayson Foster said this morning that the City of Hammond is not the governing body involved in a nationally-reported news story involving a Justice of the Peace.
Foster said that Keith Bardwell, an elected official who serves as a Tangipahoa Parish Justice of the Peace for Ward 8, is not associated with the City of Hammond.
"Contrary to what has been indicated in published news reports and in broadcasts being shown across the country, Mr. Bardwell is in no way associated, affiliated, or employed by the City of Hammond," Foster said.
Foster said that media datelines have erroneously connected Bardwell to Hammond.
Foster said that based on the number of phone calls and emails pouring into City Hall over the controversy, he has spoken with members of the Hammond City Council and all are in agreement that the City must take a stand and disavow Hammond from the parish-elected official.
"The City of Hammond supports unity," Foster said. "We cannot and will not allow our city and its reputation for bringing people together--not driving communities apart--to be tarnished by such an association."
Foster asked that media outlets correct the erroneous dateline for accuracy.
