By admin | June 26, 2008
Thanks to an unknown good citizen, the Charles Emery Cate bust has been found and turned in to Hammond Police! On July 3rd, the bronze bust of Cate, a founder of Hammond, was reported stolen from it’s brick pedestal in Cate Square Park. The heavy, bronze sculpture was found in Zemurray Park near the lagoon. It suffered some minor damage and scratches during it’s removal from the pedestal, and it will be repaired and returned to it’s home in the park named in Cate’s honor. Police are still investigating. “It is such a relief to have him back,” said Downtown Development District director Terry Lynn Smith.

Reward Offered For Return of Cate Square Artwork
By admin | June 3, 2008
The bronze sculpture of Charles Cate, one of Hammond’s founders, is missing from its pedestal in Cate Square. The life-size bust, valued at around $6,000, was reported missing on Thursday, May 29. It was securely affixed to a brick pedestal during the September 30, 2007 Cate Square Dedication ceremony, and it would appear that a thief twisted the bust off the pedestal before stealing it. The heavy, bronze bust is a likeness of Charles Cate, a founder of Hammond for whom the park is named. It was situated in the southeast corner of Cate Square, near the intersection of East Charles and North Oak Streets.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the persons responsible for the theft. The identity of the person providing the information will remain confidential. Crime Stoppers is a toll free call at 1-800-554-5245, or call Lieutenant Vickie Corkern at 985-277-5710.
