The City of Hammond, LA was chartered in 1889 and has enjoyed steady growth since that time. Many of the city's oldest buildings are located in the downtown area. Preservation of these historic areas is very important to the overall quality of life in Hammond, as the downtown provides a center to continually expanding boundaries while providing a visual link with the past, and a unique character that cannot be duplicated by new construction. The Historic District Commission is a 7-Member citizens' commission whose members have demonstrated an interest in history, design, or architecture. The Commisssion reviews plans for work within the historic district, including the erection of signs, and issues a Certificate of Appropriateness for plans that are consistent with the Historic and Architectural Design Guidelines. The Commission members provide advice and consultation regarding renovation and restoration projects, and for new signage. |
