The City of Hammond Human Resources (HR) Department provides city departments with the organization and leadership to effectively utilize the City’s most valuable assets, its people. By providing advice, support, and recommendations, the HR department assists departments in managing the City’s personnel. The Human Resources Department’s areas of responsibility include: Staffing, Employee Benefits, Compensation, Employee Relations, and Risk Management support for both Municipal Fire and Police employees and/or classified employees, and our Non-Municipal Fire and Police personnel.

The Human Resources Department is responsible for directing the employment process in accordance with all current laws and establishing job classifications and descriptions, compensation reviews, and salary ranges for positions, as well as assisting the Administration and employees in all related matters.

The City of Hammond Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board is responsible for establishing job descriptions, rules, and administering examinations for Municipal Fire and Police positions. Examinations are given as required by law or on an as needed basis.
